Hi All,

sorry for this newbie question - but can anyone tell me what do the colours on the cave map represent?

thanks,

thanks for the quick reply!

I notice that lava is pretty obvious by the orange colour on the cave map - but do you know what the yellow dots are?

thanks,
stella

BTW this is a handy tool - thanks!

Sorry, I misread the question. Here is the correct answer:

The different color shades indicate how far to the surface a cave is.

Color Key

Yellow - Near Surface
(The lighter the shade gets the higher to the closer it is to the surface)
Red - Far From the Surface
(The darker the shade gets the darker the closer it is to bedrock)

I have the same question.
For one thing, it seems that the general red to orange to yellowish to green is based on height. However, there are clearly BRIGHT YELLOW spots (as Stella mentioned) which are clearly something different. You can clearly see bright yellow in the same height (y axis) line as other blocks of various colors. Also the distribution is strange. I assume it is trying to mark special ore or something. Can someone explain?

I think this type of info should really be on a basic help page or something. I can't find any page that explains the map rendering. For example, this program seems to replicate trees (specifically or in general?) but not bushes/shrubs/short-trees (whatever they're called). It does use biome shading, which is nice, but that's not listed as a feature or anything. Have I missed some sort of basic "about" page?

Unfortunately since we did not create the map generation system we cannot modify it to a far extent. We can control any part of the site but map generation. This includes cave colors, how leaves are displayed, biomes, nether, and surface generation. We can control how some blocks are displayed with features like our texture pack system and if mods are used, what blocks are shown.

You have not missed a "About" page because it does not exist. When I have time to create one I will, but for now just use the search feature of the forums if you need help.

I know for sure that at least 90% of my bright yellow blocks can't be from me mining or building. The area under my house that I have mined has no bright yellow, yet it is scattered elsewhere throughout my world-save right up to the edge. I certainly haven't mined in all these areas.

I can see areas of the natural caves that do open to the surface, but these are not marked with any bright yellow.

So does that mean all this bright yellow marks where the game has spawned pre-made buildings? Is that what you meant by "buildings" or were you talking about player-made buildings? There seems to be more bright yellow under desert areas for some reason. Perhaps sandstone qualifies as building material? I'd try and verify it, but the angled view of the map makes it difficult to know exactly where to dig.

Thanks

Player Placed Lighting: Bright yellow lighting is marking which area of a cave/underground area that has been lit up by the player.

As you can see here https://web.archive.org/web/2020/http://www.minecraftworldmap.com/worlds/...19/max/0/2 you can see that this tunnel underneath the map has not only been explored, but has been lit up by the player, making it a brighter yellow. If the light level is low, the darker the yellow color is.

The height level still applies to the darker shades of red, the lighter the shade of red. The closer it is to the surface the lighter shade of red it is, if the cave closer to the surface is a light shade of red it means that the cave is unexplored.

I think the colours are based on depth from surface and not necessarily the actual level of the block in-game. The surface is likely determined by the highest block or maybe a more complex algorithm.

I'm not 100% though. The documentation on this feature is minimal.
